After completing a Fine Art degree in Painting at the prestigious Royal Academy Schools of Art in London, Heather spent some years specialising in wildlife art, including work producing natural history illustrations for conservation bodies like the London Wildlife Trust to depict flora, fauna and wildlife species at sites and site maps, for nature conservation sections of local councils, or for wildlife competitions such as the Bird Artist of the Year, or the National Exhibition of Wildlife Art.
An experienced teacher, Heather has many years’ experience teaching on adult education art courses and community projects, has been a tutor for the Open College of The Arts, and demonstrates art materials, techniques and topics to art groups around the country. Heather runs her own weekly classes based in Everton and Lymington, with art workshops on a variety of topics or mediums through the year. In addition, she runs one to one art sessions with individuals, where techniques or mediums can be worked through in a tailor made learning situation. Heather is a natural teacher and has many devoted students at the Solent Art School classes, where she likes to engender a friendly, relaxed, but informative and encouraging atmosphere, with new art challenges to engage with along the way.
In her own painting, Heather is drawn to the elements of light, shade and colour and structure, and is particularly influenced by these qualities found in and around the area of the Solent estuary; an area close to her heart, as it is the place of her childhood years. Texture and atmosphere are also a part of what she aims to achieve in her painting, whether it be the wood of a sea breaker or the reflections in a river; overall, a sense of ‘being there’. A deep connection with the coast has inspired more recent artworks, based on shingle beaches and fishing boats, and the vibrant scene of coastal rowing regattas.
Heather’s work has been included in annual competitions, such as at the Mall Galleries in London, open exhibitions, such as St Barbe’s Open in Hampshire or has organised and curated solo and group shows. Her work is held in numerous private and public collections in the UK, America and elsewhere.
